Aggregate
Thelen Aggregates is currently working with Plote Construction in the development of a 38 million dollar “Open Tolling” project at the Waukegan Toll Plaza located just north of Grand Ave, on I94 northbound and southbound, Gurnee IL. “Open Tolling” is a concept derived from Illinois Governor Blagojevich. “The idea behind open-road tolling was to help people get where they’re going faster, and it’s working,” Gov. Rod Blagojevich said in a statement. Thelen was responsible for providing almost 100K tons of aggregate material throughout the duration of the project. The material was used for the preparation for the road sub-base to the manufacturing of the ready mix concrete for the finishing of the road. This is a great opportunity for Thelen Aggregates to show the industry that we have the capability to manage any size project.

Thelen Aggregates is currently working with Neptune Construction in the development of the sewer and water infrastructure for six residential community developments residing in Lakemoor, Volo, and Wauconda Illinois. These projects combined will exceed 250,000 tons of material and will require roughly 12,000+ semi loads of aggregate. These projects allow Thelen to show our aggregate production capabilities as well as our logistics capabilities in order to effectively meet our customers’ production demands on time, every time.

Ready Mix
Menard’s – Antioch, IL. Thelen Ready Mix worked with Scurto Cement on the outside paving portion of the project and Ahrens Concrete on the inside flatwork.  The required pours were in excess of 500yds per day.  The project required in excess of 150yds per hour which we were able to meet and surpass. The total concrete involved in all the pours was in excess of 5000yds.  This project was completed in 10 days of pouring for both inside the building and outside. The logistics required to effectively deliver the required yardage per hour shows how Thelen can handle any size project with any time restrictions.

Great Lakes Naval Base – North Chicago, IL. Thelen Ready Mix is currently working with Builders Bloc Concrete on the military housing project. The 1st phase of the project started in October 2006 and required the completion of 160 units in less than two months. The ready mix concrete was shipped from Thelen’s Waukegan facility. The project required us to have the necessary equipment available to pour 100+ yards per day for trench foundations and flatwork. This project enabled Thelen Ready Mix to strategically utilize one of our satellite ready mix plants in order to complete this task efficiently and cost effectively, to ensure 100% customer satisfaction.

Organics
Thelen Organics manufactured and provided the compost, sand, topsoil blend for the landscape construction of Millennium Park, Chicago, IL. We provided roughly 17,000 tons of a compost planting mix responsible for the construction of the “Greater Lawn” and also provided part of the blended material required for the “Lesser Lawn” for Chicago’s prized Millennium Park. Thelen Organics was also responsible for the manufacturing of the compost mix for the planting of the “Japanese Gardens”, located at Chicago Botanical Gardens. Glencoe, IL. The “Japanese Gardens” required a compost / leaf mulch blend in order fulfill the landscape construction requirements.

Thelen Organics recently worked with Veolia Landfill, Zion IL in the creation of a bio-filter used in the landfill. We provided 5,000 yards of compost to create this bio-filter. A bio-filter is a process used to eliminate odors created from garbage or the landfill process. The organic material (compost) filters the sulfur compounds (odors) in the methane gas, which is the gas released from the landfill process. This is a natural way to eliminate the odors instead of “masking” them by spraying perfumes into the air. These bio-filters are great ways for landfills to support the communities in which they do business and achieve their environmental friendly goals in which they have created.
